Brafferton Rocks

It’s a craze that’s sweeping the North East, and by now probably the rest of the country. A new game, encouraging children to get outdoors, where they search for painted and hidden rocks. The idea is to re-hide them so that someone else can find them and so continue the game and add your own to the game too!

We are lucky enough to have a collection of these rocks hidden around Brafferton and we’re hoping the local community will join us in playing the game.

So here’s what to do.

Step One

Have a walk around the village and the woods near the train track. The rocks are hidden but not so much that you have to search for them.

Step Two

As you continue your walk find other places to rehide the rocks you’ve found.

Step Three

Pick up a few rocks and pebbles that you find on your walk. Take them home to decorate. On the bottom add your name and #braffertonrocks

Step Four

Next time you go rock hunting, hide your own rocks.

Don’t forget to take photos and post them to our Facebook group so that people can see that their rocks have been found, and clues helping parents to find them with  younger children are sometimes useful too!

The Blackheart Orchestra returns!

The Blackheart Orchestra returns to Brafferton Village Hall on Friday 6th October.

21845708_10155442227629504_1622403767_o

One of the must-see bands in the UK this year; the pioneering duo blend musical styles seamlessly sidestepping boundaries to create music huge enough to fill a cathedral. Always producing something beyond all easily marketed genres, their multi-instrumental sonic landscapes have always been too unpredictable for pop, too adventurous for the mainstream and too plain weird for folk.

The Blackheart Orchestra are often mistaken for an 8-piece band on first listen, they are found on stage continuously changing from electric and acoustic guitars, bowed guitar, piano, organ, bass and electronic percussion to vintage synthesisers, omnichord and melodica in a complex choreographed weave of musical moods and textures. One moment their sound is minimal and molecular, the next a mountain-like wall of sound with vast symphonic climaxes.

For anyone who would like to find out more you can do so on their webpage:www.theblackheartorchestra.com

Tickets are available on the door from 7pm – £7.50 adults, £3 children. Please bring your own drinks and nibbles.

Dare we mention Christmas?

Well, we’re gonna!

We have finalised the dates for our Christmas events and so wanted to share with you all.

Christmas light switch on

Sunday 3rd December, meet in the hall for 6pm.

The tree switch on is one of the most popular events within the village and really instills a sense of community spirit! Join us in the hall, dressed for the weather & carrying a torch. We will go out on to the green to turn the lights on and sing a few carols – this year we are hoping to be joined by a local children’s choir to help with the singing!

Once the singing has finished we will move back into the hall to warm up with mulled wine and mince pies.

This is a free event funded by VHA funds and family and friends are very welcome.

Family Christmas Craft Workhop

Saturday 9th December 9.30-11.30am (to be confirmed)

Come and make some Christmas cards, decorate your own Christmas eve plate (or mug), make a photo frame as a gift for family and lots more (full details tbc).

This is hosted by The Alternate WI: £10 per family, booking essential – click here for the booking site

Village Christmas party

Saturday 9th December, from 7pm

Residents and their families and friends are welcomed to this informal Christmas party. Bring a plate of food for the shared buffet, your favourite Christmas CD and wear your Christmas jumpers. We will play a few party games, and have lots of fun!

No need to book, just turn up ready to party!

This is a free event hosted by the VHA committee.

Murder and mulled wine

Friday 15th December, from 7pm to late

A festive (adult only) murder mystery night, get dressed up and indulge in our special event hosted by Tall Tale Mysteries

set in Glad Tidings Manor where there’s a body in the library that shouldn’t be there and Lord Jolyon Jape is about to lose his butler permanently!

You will be greated with a glass of mulled wine and mince pies on your table, a finger buffet will then be available at the interval. Following the murder mystery guests are invited to stay on for a bit of a party!

This is hosted by The Alternate WI: Tickets will be priced at £12.50 with a special limited number of early bird tickets available until 30th September priced at £10

Tickets must be booked and paid for in advance – click here for the booking site

Children’s Christmas Party

Sunday 17th December, 3-5pm

We can’t forget the children can we? There’ll be dancing, singing, party games and a Christmas story (or 2)! Unfortunately there will not be a visit from Santa but we’ve been in touch and he’s promised to make a delivery for the children the night before.

This is hosted by The Alternate WI: There is a nominal £1 charge per child which can be paid on the day, but booking required so we can tell Santa how many children to bring a gift for!

Charity Fashion Show

Shopping evening

The fun and informal fashion show will start at approx 8pm and will last about 30 minutes.

The models are all “real life” volunteers with no experience whatsoever. Hair and Make up is being done beforehand by Sarah Whelan and her new company Prim & Pamper and we couldn’t be more excited about it!

With September being the month of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning it was decided to donate funds to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Sound Healing comes to Brafferton

We are so excited to have been booked by Sound Healing Lotus Academy to host a Sound Healing evening.

The first of which will take place on Friday 22nd September at 7.15pm and then continue on a monthly basis.

Brafferton Village Hall September

You can secure your place by calling Stuart on the number above, though this isn’t strictly necessary – but please use the Facebook event to record that you’ll be going.

You’re asked to bring a yoga mat, blanket and pillow and wear comfortable clothes (we do have some spare mats and blankets, please ask if you’d like one saving).

Approved party suppliers

Following one mum’s problem with getting a bouncy castle for her little girl’s birthday party we discussed building an approved party supplier list.

Approved party suppliers (1)

We’re not sure if we will go down the party packages route as yet but we’d like to build a list of suppliers who we have already checked documentation and can recommend to potential hirers.

There will be a dedicated page for our approved suppliers on our webpage where we can link to your business. If you’re interested please contact us either via our Facebook page or emailing braffertonvha@outlook.com

Pizza and Prosecco night

Pizza and prosecco seem to be the next big thing; almost every pizzeria locally is running special offers combining the two. So we thought, why not have a go too and help raise vital funds for our VHA!

Let’s face it, what’s not to like?

You can reserve individual, couple or group tickets – all available from Cozy Coffee from Tuesday 22nd August or by posting in the Facebook event. Payment on the door is fine, but the tickets will help ensure we have enough pizza!

The cost works out at £10 per person and will include a pizza platter for your table (baked onsite, but not handmade) and a complimentary bottle of Prosecco to share between two. If you wish to bring additional drinks you are very welcome to.

Pizza and prosecco

If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know before reserving your tickets to ensure we can meet them! You’re still very welcome to join us for just the prosecco at a discounted rate of course 😉
